From this side of the gate.
Jan Thiel, Curaçao.
The neighborhood guide.
Where the water is calm, how far everything is, which beach club gets your towel and the tables we actually eat at. From the people who live here.
Calm water. Four clubs. One gate.
Everything else is five minutes away.
The only complaint
Autumn stayed at Happy Hideaway in November 2023 and had one complaint about the neighborhood: “The Tommy Coconut vehicle let us into the Jan Thiel resort area so quickly we barely had time to wave back to the gatekeeper every time.” — Autumn, Airbnb review, Happy Hideaway, November 2023.
That’s Jan Thiel’s biggest problem. We’ve made our peace with it.
Here’s the rest of the neighborhood — from the people on this side of the gate. It’s written for whoever is three tabs deep tonight, comparing corners of the island after the house has gone quiet. You don’t have to book anything with us to use it.
Where Jan Thiel is (and why the water is calm)
Stand at the water’s edge at Jan Thiel at eight in the morning and the sea barely moves. Small kids walk in up to their knees and keep going. Nobody shouts them back.
That’s the whole reason to be here. Jan Thiel sits on Curaçao’s south-east coast, between Willemstad and Spanish Water — the calm, clear, swimmable side of the island. The wild water and the famous cliffs are on the far west end. This side is where the ocean does the heavy lifting and you get on with your day.
It’s a neighborhood, not a resort wall. Houses, a beach, a marina, a supermarket, a few streets that all lead back to the sand. Close enough to Willemstad for a night out. Far enough that you wake up to quiet. It’s also where our eight estates are, a few hundred meters apart — not by accident. More on how the island’s areas compare in our guide to where to stay in Curaçao.
How far everything is
The first question every group asks us on the drive from the airport is how far everything is. The second is whether they need the car for all of it. Here’s the answer to both, from the front door of any of our estates:
- Jan Thiel beach clubs — 3–5 min
- The supermarket — 3–5 min
- Mambo Beach Boulevard — 15 min
- Willemstad and the Queen Emma Bridge — 20 min
- Hato Airport — 45 min
- The Westpunt beaches — 45 min
On foot, Jan Thiel beach is five to ten minutes from the estates, and Caracasbaai is a five-minute walk from Bayside Hill. Everything else on this list wants a car. The island is small. The roads are not in a hurry.
Jan Thiel Beach and its four clubs
The gate is the first thing you notice. A barrier, a gatehouse, a wave. For Tommy Coconut guests the turquoise car is the pass: the gate opens on its own, no line, no fee, no bochincha [chaos]. For everyone else, there’s no public entry fee for Jan Thiel Beach.
Then the sand, and four beach clubs along one stretch of it. Each one is for somebody different:
Papagayo — the shallowest water on the beach and an infinity pool. Beach club energy, good for groups, and the one for small kids.
Zanzibar — the Jan Thiel classic. The default for a slow lunch with a swim, and walkable from every estate.
Zest — picnic tables in the sand, cabanas and bright, clean plates. The one for a family coming off a big adventure day.
Koko’s — smoothies, açaí bowls and the most relaxed chair on the beach. Feet in the sand. Rum punch optional. Usually not.
Behind the sand: shops for the sunscreen you forgot, a dive center, beach tennis courts and a small casino. If you want a daybed held, our guests drop a message in their group and we reserve it. The beach is the full tour in our beaches chapter.
Four beaches within five minutes
Ask anyone on this side of the island where to swim and you’ll get four answers, all of them within a five-minute drive of each other.
Jan Thiel. The walk-to one. Beach clubs, calm water, everything above.
Directors Bay. The other one five minutes away. Ask in the group which is calmest today; the answer changes with the wind.
Tugboat. A small wreck in shallow, ridiculously clear water, coral grown over it and fish everywhere. One of the easiest snorkels on the island. Raymonde and Cameron snorkel here on Tuesdays.
Caracas Bay. Caracasbaai to the locals, a five-minute walk from Bayside Hill. Boy and Britt fish here on Mondays.
One family named their favorites: “Jan Thiel beach, Tugboat beach, and Directors Bai were our favorites.” — Janet, guest story, April 2024.
The famous west-coast coves are another day out, and a good one. Which one, on which day, is in our guide to the best beaches in Curaçao.
Where to eat in and around Jan Thiel
One guest summed up the neighborhood’s mornings in a single line of her review: “we loved our morning walk to the Coffee Bike.” — Janine, Airbnb review, Castaway Beach, December 2025.
The Coffee Bike is John and Delia, at the Caracasbaai roundabout, a few hundred meters from your front door. 100% Colombian, pastries hot, smoothies cold. Closed Mondays. Even John and Delia rest.
For the rest of the day, these are the tables Tommy actually eats at, in the order of the drive:
Villa Vis, a 5-minute walk — the table by the water. Oceanfront, fresh catch, the soft landing we use to start any week.
Brisa Do Mar, 3 minutes — Pop’s Place, at Caracasbaai, off the tourist map. Local fishermen, local beer, fresh catch from the bay. It also does the best eggs benedict in Jan Thiel, every morning of the week.
Mei Mei, 5 minutes — Brakkeput Mei Mei, standing since 1700. A Caribbean grill, open air, old island.
Pasawa Eatery, 8 minutes — shipping containers, street art, seven food stalls and a bar in the middle. No reservation needed.
De Gouverneur, 25 minutes — the one to dress for, in Willemstad, with the harbor in front of you and Punda’s painted facades across the water.
Lunch lives at the beach clubs above, plus Saluá when you want somewhere easy and MOOD Beach at Mambo for the lunch that turns into an afternoon. That’s our list. The whole of it, with the reasons, is on the Restaurants page.
Spanish Water, the marina and the boat
At Castaway Beach, the marina is ten steps from the outdoor kitchen. Close enough to hand someone on the dock a plate.
That’s Spanish Water, the bay next door: a marina, the mangroves, and Table Mountain sitting across the water. Four of our estates are on this side for a reason. Castaway Beach sits over the marina. Sailaway Beach is the Spanish Water side for guests who want to step out and be on the water in ten minutes. Tropical Haven looks straight across the bay from its porch. Sunshine Bay is a short walk from all three.
The boat trip leaves from here. One half day of the week, Captain Magic Mike takes the boat out to hidden beaches and the Tugboat, and the family grills aboard. Captain Herbert knows the Spanish Water channels and the mangrove routes. Ask him where he’s taking you. He’ll smile.
What happens here in a week
The dogs go first. Monday to Friday at sunrise, Happy and Lucky — our Board of Directors — lead the flamingo hike before the island is awake. Weekends, they rest. This is not negotiable.
Here’s the rest of the neighborhood calendar, as we live it:
Mondays — Boy and Britt fish at Caracas Bay.
Tuesdays — Raymonde and Cameron snorkel at Tugboat.
Wednesdays — Sunset Club on Jan Thiel beach. A bonfire, marshmallows, cold drinks and the whole family. You walk over from the estate with bare feet.
Sundays — padel, 16:00 to 18:00. Doubles, rotating partners, the score matters a little but not much.
None of it is an appointment. If you feel like joining, drop a message in the group. If you’d rather stay in the pool, the pool is also a plan. The full week, and who hosts what, is on Dushi Memories.
Jan Thiel vs Mambo Beach vs Willemstad
Three corners, three different trips. All three are good.
Mambo Beach. The livelier strip, 15 minutes from Jan Thiel. A boardwalk of bars, shops and music near the aquarium. Perfect for a drink and people-watching; wrong for a quiet swim.
Willemstad. The walkable UNESCO city, split by the harbor into Punda and Otrobanda. Walk out the door into coffee, shops and dinner. It’s a working city, so you trade some quiet for the energy, and the best swimming is a drive away.
Jan Thiel. Calm, swimmable water, beach clubs and good tables within a few minutes, and the city 20 minutes away. Jan Thiel is where you sleep well.
The rest of the island — Pietermaai, Westpunt, and the one decision that matters more than the postcode — is in where to stay in Curaçao.
Staying in Jan Thiel
If Jan Thiel sounds like your corner, this is the part where we tell you we have eight estates in it, a few hundred meters apart, each one sleeping six to eight. The car in the driveway opens the gate. The family down the road knows which club is quiet on a Tuesday, books the dinners above, and answers when you message.
That’s a Dushi Week: the estate, the car, the boat trip and every dinner arranged before you land, with 700+ guests who have done it before you. See all eight on the estates page, or keep this guide and make your own way. The neighborhood works either way.
Frequently asked questions
Is Jan Thiel a good area to stay?
For most people, yes. Jan Thiel sits on the calm, clear, swimmable south-east coast, with beach clubs, restaurants and quiet coves within a few minutes, and Willemstad 20 minutes away for a night out. You wake up to quiet water. If you want to walk out the door into a city, stay in Willemstad instead.
How far is Jan Thiel from the airport?
About 45 minutes by car from Hato Airport.
Can you walk to Jan Thiel Beach?
From our estates, yes: a five-to-ten-minute walk, or three to five minutes in the car. The four beach clubs sit along the same stretch of sand.
Is Jan Thiel Beach free?
Yes. There is no public entry fee for Jan Thiel Beach. Tommy Coconut guests drive straight through the gate in the estate car.
Jan Thiel or Mambo Beach?
Mambo Beach is the livelier strip: a boardwalk of bars, shops and music, good for a drink and people-watching, wrong for a quiet swim. Jan Thiel is calmer, with swimmable water and beach clubs that suit groups and small kids. They are 15 minutes apart, so you can sleep in one and visit the other.
